Over/under on UFO reports this morning?

As former meteorologists and self-proclaimed space nerds, my husband and I had been following the updates for NASA's ATREX experiment for a few weeks. Initially scheduled for earlier this month, the launch had been postponed several times due to uncooperative weather (amongst other things). Last night before bed, we saw that the launch had reached another window, from 2-5am this morning.

Jon had to wake up super early for a work thing today, and when his alarm went off at 4:30 the countdown was at T-8 minutes and holding. It picked back up shortly after, and juuuust before the end of the launch window, at 4:58 am, the first rocket launched.

So why am I telling you this? There are pictures, kids!

In case you're wondering, the purpose of these rockets (there were five, launched off the east coast) was to release chemical tracers to study the winds in the high-altitude jet stream (higher than the one you fly in).

Apparently my getting up early was worth it - emails have been coming for permission to use my pictures! Check them out online: Spaceweather.com (they accidentally called me Alice!); Mashable, Space.com, Fluidr Explore #160, Canadian Awareness

there's children throwing snowballs instead of throwing heads

Last November when my husband and I left New England for Virginia, we did not expect that two days before Halloween this year we'd see snow.
But oh, lest we forget that Mother Nature is one tricky lady; she didn't let us escape the New England weather totally.  I was a little mad that we were actually going to get snow in October, but once it started I was as giddy as ever.  SNOW!

(by the way, my post title is a line from What's This from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas)

Summer

It's officially summer! And it has been for a few days, but I'm a little late to the party. To celebrate, I've given the blog a little makeover. It's still a work in progress, but I like it so far.

Pictures?  I've got 'em.

Look ma, no tarballs!  Destin, Florida - pre-oil disaster.

Flight delays.

Almost 99% sure I'm going to add this one to my Etsy shop soon.

Self portrait.

Another self portrait.  More interesting would have been a picture of me taking this because of the way I had to bend to get it.
