Happy Halloween!

hween3

Things were looking grim as Sandy ripped its way through the Eastern US, but Halloween is on as usual here in Virginia.  We had two non-Sandy related casualties, however, in the way of two-thirds of our carving pumpkins having rotted.  So we were left with one pumpkin to do our themed carving on.  I managed to fit both patterns on the one pumpkin, and voila, here it is it all its gory glory.

(And don't forget to see my third annual Halloween video here.)

picture fall four: morning light

If you’ve ever risen before the rest of the world, you’ve experienced the quiet and calm that is unique to early morning hours. It’s not easy to find that stillness in the hustle of racing to get out the door to start our busy day. Taking a few minutes to center yourself (by drinking in some inner-peace if you will) can set the right precedent for the day ahead. No matter what your morning might look like, find something, anything at all, that whispers the kind of quiet reassurance you need to ease yourself into your day today.

picture fall three: the beauty challenge

It’s easy to find beauty in seasons that boast vibrant colors and blooms, but what about when Nature begins its retreat? It takes a much keener eye to seek out the beautiful in starkness. Look beyond what you might normally notice and discover something that most people would overlook and perhaps never deem photo-worthy.

picture fall two: get comfy

Why not celebrate the harvest by getting comfortable. Find that place that you feel most at home and let yourself settle in a bit. Enjoy a hot cup of tea or pop some popcorn (the quintessential snack food for fall) and put your feet up.

I can't say I actually got comfy in my chair by the window today, since I spent half the day deep cleaning the kitchen (bleach was involved, you guys) and the rest of the day editing.  But when I do decide to put my feet up, it's in this chair (in the foreground) with a cup of tea, a book or magazine, and a cozy throw blanket.

picture fall | one: quintessential fall

Not unlike the blooms of spring, the leaves of fall are uniquely compelling, each different in their own way. Spend some time studying the leaves that have already begun to fall and capture one that stirs your sense of the season.

Picture Fall

Happy autumn!

Remember the Picture the Holidays project?  Now I'm working on the Picture Fall project to get me to slow down and enjoy the season.  I feel like a broken record lately, but things have been super busy and I really want to make sure I have a chance to keep my creative juices flowing and not get so overwhelmed with work.  So stick around to see what Picture Fall has to offer.

Oh, and if you're interested, head on over to Love Knot Photo to check out some sneak peaks of our latest weddings and engagement shoots.

lightning!

So before I started working from home as a photo editor, I was a meteorologist. Even though I left my job and started something new (a long story), I still love weather. Every meteorologist I know nerds out over major weather events. Some go wild over winter storms, but my big fascination is with severe storms.

Tonight we had derecho - a fast moving storm system associated with very high winds - move through the area. To give you an idea of how quickly this storm moved, the system moved from the midwest to DC in just six hours.

Anyway, Jon and I attempted to (or I should say, I begged him to) go for a quick drive to check out the insane lightning just before the storm hit. We were monitoring the storm, and knew we were just minutes away from having the gust front come through. We made it just a few blocks away when the gust front came hard, blowing limbs from trees. We were dodging debris like they did in Twister. Already the streets were littered with branches, so we turned back.

After the major part of the storm moved through, we tried a second time. Trees are down all over the place. I managed to get shots of some lightning while I was out, and since we are of the lucky few in town (in the whole area, even) who still have power, I have uploaded them already. I had kind of a crude setup: I had my Sigma 10-20mm wide angle on my 7D, and perched it on the car door with the window down. I had my tripod with me, but because it was still raining I didn't feel like using it. The exposure was only two seconds, so it worked well enough. Enjoy, and be safe out there.
